Gary Merrell announced his candidacy for Delaware County Commissioner. Merrell, a Republican, is running for the Delaware County Commission seat which term begins on January 2, 2013 and is currently held by Commissioner Tommy Thompson.

“Over the last several weeks, I have met with dozens of Delaware County elected officials, business leaders and community activists. Repeatedly in these conversations, people have expressed their disappointment with Commissioner Thompson’s leadership and have encouraged me to run. After careful consideration, I am fully confident that I have the experience and background needed to serve Delaware County as your next Commissioner,” said Merrell.

Merrell’s campaign will focus on a need to bring greater fiscal responsibility, more open communication and added transparency to the Delaware County Commission. Merrell, the former publisher of the Delaware Gazette and executive at the Columbus Dispatch, has an extensive background in management and finance.

Merrell said he plans to provide a fresh, questioning approach, and continually ask the question: Are we spending the money in such a way as to receive maximum value for all of us living in Delaware County?”

“I have been overwhelmed by the early enthusiasm for my candidacy and will work tirelessly to earn the support of the residents of Delaware County. I look forward to campaigning in every part of the county and telling voters first-hand what my vision is for our county government,” remarked Merrell.

Merrell and his wife Cathy have been married for 39 years. They have two grown daughters, a 12 year old son and three grandchildren. Merrell has served on the board of the Delaware Chamber of Commerce, the Delaware County United Way and Community Action. He resides in Liberty Township.
